New York Beyond Manhattan: A Five-Borough Itinerary

First-time visitors stay in Midtown and never leave. Repeat visitors quickly discover that 80% of New York's energy lives across the bridges. Spend one day in Manhattan to get it out of your system, then dedicate four days to the boroughs that actually shaped the city.

Day 1 — Manhattan, fast

Start at the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side for a 90-minute reframing of what New York is. Walk up through Chinatown to Little Italy and Nolita for lunch. Afternoon at The Met. Sunset on the High Line, dinner in Hell's Kitchen.

Day 2 — Brooklyn

Brunch in Williamsburg at Sunday in Brooklyn or Le Crocodile. Walk south along Bedford and across to Greenpoint for Polish bakeries and small-press galleries. Afternoon at the Brooklyn Museum and Botanic Garden in Prospect Heights. Dinner in Fort Greene at Olmsted or Walter's. End with cocktails at Maison Premiere — possibly New York's best bar.

Day 3 — Queens

Queens is America's most ethnically diverse county and your stomach should drive the day. Morning at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City. Lunch in Flushing — the dumplings at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. Afternoon walk through Jackson Heights for Indian, Tibetan and Colombian food on a single block. Late dinner of Greek seafood in Astoria at Taverna Kyclades.

Day 4 — The Bronx

Morning at the New York Botanical Garden — 250 acres, the city's only old-growth woodland. Lunch at Mike's Deli in Arthur Avenue, the original "Little Italy" before tourism reshaped Mulberry Street. Afternoon at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, then catch a Yankees game if the season aligns. Hip-hop pilgrims add 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the birthplace of the genre.

Day 5 — Staten Island

Take the free Staten Island Ferry for the city's best Statue of Liberty view (no tickets required). On the island, lunch at Enoteca Maria, where rotating grandmothers from around the world cook the menu. Return via ferry at sunset and walk the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan side.

Where to stay

Skip Times Square. Stay in Long Island City for views and easy boroughs access, or in Williamsburg for the food and walking scene. The L, G and 7 trains make this far easier than Midtown suggests.

Practicalities

Get a 7-day unlimited MetroCard. Subway is 24/7. Tip 18–20% in restaurants and $1 per drink at bars. Avoid driving — parking is a punishment and rideshares get gridlocked.
