The Balkans deliver some of the best value travel in Europe — turquoise coast, dramatic mountains, layered history, and prices half of Western Europe's. Three weeks overland gives you space for slow towns and proper food, without the breakneck pace short trips force on you.
The route
Zagreb → Plitvice → Zadar → Split → Mostar → Sarajevo → Belgrade → Kotor → Tirana → Berat → Sarandë → Corfu (option to fly out from Corfu or return overland).
Week 1 — Croatia
Zagreb (2 nights): An overlooked Central European capital. Walk the upper town, eat at Vinodol or La Štruk for traditional pastries, visit the Museum of Broken Relationships.
Plitvice Lakes (1 night): Sleep nearby and enter at opening to beat the day-trip coaches. Boardwalks over turquoise pools.
Zadar (2 nights): Roman ruins, the Sea Organ, the best sunsets in the Adriatic according to Hitchcock himself.
Split (2 nights): Live inside Diocletian's Palace. Day trip to Hvar or Brač for a beach afternoon.
Week 2 — Bosnia and Serbia
Mostar (2 nights): The reconstructed Ottoman bridge over the Neretva river is iconic — quiet at sunrise, packed by mid-morning. Day trips to Blagaj dervish house and Pocitelj fortress village.
Sarajevo (3 nights): One of Europe's most affecting cities. The Tunnel of Hope, the Old Town's coppersmiths' bazaar, ćevapi at Željo, sunset from the Yellow Bastion. Stay long enough to do justice to the complexity.
Belgrade (2 nights): A city that parties on rivers — drink and dance on the splavovi floating clubs. Day-side: Kalemegdan fortress, Tito's grave, the brutalist apartment blocks of New Belgrade as a guided architectural walk.
Week 3 — Montenegro, Albania, and the coast
Kotor (2 nights): A fjord-like bay framed by mountains. Climb the city walls at dawn before the cruise ships arrive. Day trips to Perast and the Lady of the Rocks island.
Tirana (2 nights): Albania's capital has reinvented itself in a decade — Skanderbeg Square, Bunk'Art (a Cold War bunker turned art museum), some of the best espresso outside Italy.
Berat (1 night): The "city of a thousand windows," white Ottoman houses stacked above the Osum river.
Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera (2 nights): Ksamil for swimming, Butrint for Roman and Byzantine ruins, Himarë for slower beaches.
Corfu (1 night optional): Ferry across, Old Town walk, fly home.
Getting around
Buses are the spine. Reliable, cheap, frequent: FlixBus, BlaBlaBus, and national operators like Lasta. Trains exist but are slow except in Croatia. Renting a car is brilliant in Montenegro and Albania, fussy elsewhere with international borders. The Mostar–Sarajevo train is one of the most scenic in Europe — book a window seat.
Borders
Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania are not Schengen — your passport gets stamps. Bring a paper backup of your travel insurance. Check the latest visa rules for non-EU passports. Carry small amounts of local currency for each country; Bosnian convertible marks, Serbian dinars, Montenegro uses euros, Albania uses lek.
What to eat
Ćevapi everywhere, burek for breakfast, grilled river trout in Bosnia, ajvar with everything, Turkish-style coffee, Albanian byrek, Montenegrin njeguški pršut. Wines are a discovery: try Croatian Plavac Mali, Serbian Prokupac, Macedonian Vranec.
When to go
May–June and September–early October are ideal. July–August is hot, with the Adriatic coast crowded but the inland still manageable. Avoid March–April in the mountains (cold rain) and November–February for the coast (most things close).
